Our Story

Salt Life Academy started with a simple idea – to build a life around the ocean.

For founder Shamanth Kumar, the ocean was never just a place to surf. It was where he found purpose, discipline, and direction. Wanting to create something sustainable and meaningful, he set out to turn his passion into a profession – what began as a personal journey soon grew into something larger.

Having spent his teenage years coaching individuals in the sport of surfing, Shamanth recognised a clear gap in the Indian surf industry. While more people were discovering the sport, there were no clear pathways for those who wanted to go beyond the basics. Structured training was limited for individuals to become instructors, lifeguards, or build a career in the ocean industry.

Salt Life Academy was created to change that – not just to teach the basics, but to build a system where individuals could train with intent, gain recognised certifications, and prepare for real opportunities in the global ocean industry.

Today, Salt Life Academy is a professional training and certification academy focused on developing skilled, confident, and employable ocean professionals. As an exclusive partner in India for the International Surfing Association, and affiliated with international life saving bodies, the academy offers globally recognised programs.

Training goes beyond technique. It’s about responsibility in the water, understanding safety and risk, and the ability to teach, lead, and respond in real-world situations. Led by Shamanth Kumar, every course is grounded in experience, practical knowledge, and a deep respect for the ocean.

Beyond professional training, Salt Life Academy is committed to supporting coastal communities in India, preserving ocean ecology and promoting responsible, sustainable engagement with the ocean.
